A panoramic multitouch image viewer lets visitors explore the Birmingham skyline

An interactive exhibit developed with Vulcan Park and Museum

Vulcan Park and Museum is located on a bluff high above Birmingham, Alabama. Visitors have always enjoyed a dramatic view of the downtown area from the museum gallery, which has floor to ceiling glass windows. A pair of multitouch-enabled kiosks added to the space allows visitors to explore a 180-degree panoramic image of downtown that includes photographic points of interest.

Visitors can select images and descriptions and learn more about Birmingham and the surrounding area. Simple pinch gestures allow visitors to zoom in, while flick gestures allow visitors to flip through images. Inexpensive HP TouchSmart computers are housed in TouchStands, Ideum’s own custom-built stands and enclosures for mass-market touchscreens. These rugged stands are built specifically for high-traffic public environments.

The panoramic viewer application was developed using Adobe Flash. An XML structure (with x and y coordinates) makes it easy to add or change points of interest. All of the images and descriptions are external to the application, making it simple to update.

You can learn more about the TouchStands for the HP TouchSmart computer at our website. For more information, visit the Vulcan Park and Museum website.
