Living with a Star accompanies a book of the same title developed by the Lawrence Hall of Science GEMS (Great Explorations in Math and Science) program. The CD-ROM contains articles, student exercises, and other resources that help explain the science of the Sun and its effects on Earth.

The CD-ROM uses a standard Web browser and Apple's QuickTime video. An automated installer makes sure that teachers have the appropriate software. Since the Web browser uses Web-based technology, the CD-ROM can access new materials and classroom resources. In addition to the CD-ROM itself, Ideum created stand-alone packaging for additional distribution.
